Variable Reluctance Speed Sensors
Variable Reluctance speed sensors can sense a ferrous metal target and are ideal for use in all types of environments and user specifications. Options include hermetically sealed, cryogenic, high temperature, intrinsically safe and explosion proof.
In addition to the more common VR sensors, we also offer an inductive type speed sensor for applications where magnets, rather than ferrous metal, will be sensed.
CUSTOM MODELS
In addition to our standard models, Variable Reluctance speed sensors are available in custom lengths, diameters, configurations, and mounting threads. Custom operating specifications (output options, etc.) are available, as well as options such as pigtail leads or NPT threading. See additional sensor customization options.
Epoxy Encapsulated Variable Reluctance Speed Sensors
Value series VR speed sensors are epoxy encapsulated models that are most suitable for applications that do not have special environmental requirements (e.g., wide operating temperature range, hermeticity, atmospheric contamination, etc.). Standard models feature metal fronts to better protect the sensor internals from moisture intrusion (versus an epoxy encapsulated front). Connectors are welded to the sensor body, providing assurance that there will not be issues when installing mating connectors.

Hermetically Sealed VR Speed Sensors
Premium series VR speed sensors are hermetically sealed for resistance to moisture and other atmospheric contamination and can withstand repeated thermocycling in temperatures ranging from -450°F to +450°F, making them ideal for use in aerospace and other applications with broad temperature ranges. They are also excellent for use in cyrogenics for their ability to operate dependably at extremely low temperatures for long periods of time.

High Temperature Variable Reluctance Sensors
Variable reluctance speed sensors for extreme high temperature applications. Feature an operating temperature range of -450°F to +850°F and +1000°F intermittently. Standard models are equipped with a flexible stainless steel braided sheath that can withstand exposure to +1000°F. Special materials and construction prevent damage from physical abuse and thermal shock. In addition, all High Temperature magnetic sensors are hermetically sealed.

Dual Winding VR Sensors
This product family offers Variable Reluctance (VR) speed sensors that integrate dual windings within the sensor housing to provide redundant output capability, and are extremely popular in aerospace and other critical applications. Standard models incorporate stainless steel housings, MIL spec connectors or cabling, and grounding to case to enhance protection against EMI and external noise. This line of sensors also offers a wide temperature range and is suitable for use in cryogenic environments.

Active Speed Sensors - Variable Reluctance and RF Models
Active, or amplified sensors with digital output offer a low cost solution for interfacing directly to data acquisition systems. These sensors integrate a preamplifier/signal conditioner within the sensor housing and offer the advantages of excellent noise immunity and greater transmission capability.
Input power supply requirements cover the most popular ranges for both commercial and industrial use. The output frequency of these sensors has a square pulse waveform (digital) that directly relates to the number of turbine blades, gear teeth, etc. that have been sensed. These pulses, in turn, can be correlated to determine flow rate, RPM, or velocity.

DME Series
Motion Sensors DME series of active variable reluctance (VR) speed sensors are similiar to our standard DM series amplified sensors. The DME series offers EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) susceptability hardening and improved performance in environments with greater external electrical noise and disruptions. The DME series is equivalent to the Honeywell 584xx series while also offering CE compliance and additional pulse output offerings.
